When people tell me that print newspaper is soon to be a thing of that past, I often can not believe it. I’ve taken to reading the paper over the last few years and value holding a physical object in my hand, much more so than reading it on a screen. But part of that value died yesterday when the headline of the very first story on the front page of the Cincinnati Enquirer read: Competition saves pennies per gallon.

An Enquirer analysis of daily sales at 716 area gas stations in May and June found that regular, unleaded fuel was about a penny-a-gallon less at stations with at least one competitor within one mile, compared to stations with rivals farther away.

You’re kidding, right?

Now, either the editors of the paper have lost their belief in the intelligence of humanity, or they didn’t pass high school history. You see, we learned in 9th grade history that one of the foundations of capitalist theory is the idea that competition drives prices down — it’s basic stuff people.

So, say want you want about print media, because after reading that article I have lost much of my faith.
